SMS Messaging

The SMS (Short Message Service) protocol is the messaging protocol used for most text pagers, cell phones, PDAs, and other mobile messaging devices.

To send a message to such a device, adTempus must connect to a service provider (or gateway). Therefore, before you can set up a notification recipient that uses such a device, you must define the service provider.

adTempus can connect to the service provider using a dial-up (modem) connection or using a TCP/IP network connection.

Configuring a Service Provider

  1. Decide whether you will use a modem or network connection. Generally you will want to use a network connection, as that will allow greater message throughput and will not tie up your modem.

However, if you do not have a full-time network connection or if your network connection is unreliable, you may wish to use a modem connection instead.

Also if you are using adTempus to monitor your network connectivity and alert you of any problems, you will want to use a modem connection: adTempus can't use a network connection to tell you that your network connection has failed.

Note that you can use both approaches, even when notifying the same device. For example, you can have on notification address defined that notifies your pager using a network connection, and a second address defined to notify the same pager using a modem connection.

  1. Find the gateway or service provider configuration information. Your company may operate or subscribe to an SMS gateway service that can automatically dispatch messages to the proper carrier for delivery. If so, check with the system administrator for the configuration information you will need to connect to this gateway.

Otherwise, you may be able to connect directly to a modem or network gateway operated by the company that services the device. For example, if you need to notify a SkyTel pager, you will use SkyTel's dial-up connection or SMS gateway server. You will need to contact the carrier to obtain the information you need to configure the service provider in adTempus. Generally the carrier's Web site will have a section for application developers that contains this information.

If you want to use a modem connection, you can try searching the carrier's Web site for "TAP", which is the modem protocol used by most carriers. For a network connection, try searching for "SNPP" or "SMPP".

adTempus is installed with a list of many known service providers and can configure itself automatically based on this list. When you create the Service Provider (see following step), click the Import button to view a list of known providers.

  1. Set up a Service Provider in adTempus. This is done from the Messaging Service Providers list in the Notification Recipients group in the Console.
